Dog, Cat and Exotic Surgery Protocol

Before taking your pet into surgery, your veterinarian will discuss the procedure with you. We will perform a preoperative examination and run in-house blood work on your pet prior to surgery to make sure they are healthy enough to be anesthetized. If you prefer, this can be done the day of their procedure or further in advance. In dogs and cats, we ask that you withhold your pet’s food for 12 hours before their surgery, then drop them off at our clinic between 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Please call (954) 748-2002 for instructions for the unique needs of our exotic species.

Pets receive an IV catheter for the administration of antibiotics, anesthetics, analgesics, and fluid therapy. Our dedicated team monitors the patient’s vitals through their entire surgery, checking anesthesia levels, blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, ECG, and respiratory rate. In recovery, your pet will be given warm blankets and watched throughout the afternoon. You are welcome and encouraged to call throughout the day for updates on their condition, and so that we can let you know when they are ready to return home.

We believe the key to maintaining strong relationships with our clients is keeping them well informed about every aspect of their pet’s healthcare program, including surgery. If your pet is a candidate for a surgical procedure or is currently recovering at home, please call us at any time at (954) 748-2002 if you have questions or concerns.
