Genetic Testing: What Breed Is My Dog?
Have you ever looked at your dog and wondered, “What breed is my pup?” Maybe your dog was adopted without papers, or the listed breed just doesn’t seem to match the look or behavior. While guessing a dog’s breed can be fun, knowing the genetic background can be incredibly helpful for understanding health risks, behavioral traits, and how to provide the best care.
Can You Really Guess a Dog’s Breed by Its Appearance?
A study by the University of Florida’s Shelter Medicine Program tested how accurately dog breeds can be identified by appearance. More than 5,000 professionals—veterinarians, trainers, breeders, and groomers—were shown photos of 100 dogs and asked to guess the breeds. The results were compared to DNA tests, and many guesses were incorrect.
This study confirmed what many veterinarians already know: appearances can be misleading, and DNA testing is the most reliable way to determine breed makeup.

Why Canine DNA Testing Matters
While it’s exciting to learn a dog’s breed history, DNA testing can also provide valuable health insights. At Welleby Veterinary Hospital, we use veterinary-grade genetic testing that goes beyond standard at-home kits.
Here’s what sets our testing apart:
-
Screens for over 250 genetic markers associated with inherited diseases
-
Helps identify risks early—even before symptoms develop
-
Allows us to personalize veterinary care based on genetic predispositions
-
Supports long-term wellness through informed health planning
Whether a dog is a purebred or a mix, understanding its genetic makeup helps us provide better, more targeted veterinary care.
