Why Spay and Neuter Surgeries are Recommended
Spaying and neutering are among the most common and important surgical procedures we perform. These surgeries prevent unwanted litters and can benefit your pet’s health in several ways:
- For Females: Spaying reduces the risk of uterine infections like pyometra, along with various cancers (mammary gland tumors and ovarian/uterine cancers). Spaying also eliminates the heat cycle and reduces or prevents hormonal behaviors like mounting, vocalizing, and roaming.
- For Males: Neutering helps prevent issues like testicular tumors and an enlarged prostate. It also reduces hormonal behaviors in males such as aggressiveness, territorial marking, mounting, vocalizing, and roaming.
During your pet’s checkup when we discuss spaying or neutering, we’ll talk about the ideal timing for the surgery and any specific needs based on their health, breed, and lifestyle. Our goal is to help you make informed decisions that ensure the best outcomes for your pet’s well-being.
What to Expect on Your Pet’s Surgery Day
Your pet needs to fast for about 12 hours before their surgery. When they arrive at our hospital, they are prepared with a sedative and/or pain medication. Throughout the surgery, our team makes sure they are as comfortable and safe as possible using strict monitoring protocols.
After the procedure, we continue to monitor their recovery and will inform you when your pet can go home. We’ll provide you with detailed home care instructions to guide you in the following days or weeks. We welcome your follow-up calls at (954) 748-2002 to discuss your pet’s recovery or any other concerns you might have.
